One of the reasons why I was extremely excited for my summer vacation to the Philippines last April was the taste of the authentic Pinoy dishes.
I imagined myself savoring the thick deep yellow peanut sauce of the classic kare-kare and enjoying the rich and complex flavors of my all-time favorite dish dinuguan. I patiently waited to feast on the cuisines that define authentic Pinoy dishes such as adobo, sinigang, pinakbet, chicken inasal and lechon, among others.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 happened and cancelled everything. It broke my heart and caused so much distress on my taste buds. The relish on authentic Pinoy dishes will have to wait another time. So as I thought.
Luckily, I may not have to wait until the travel bans are lifted. I recently got a call from a friend that she and her partners have opened a restaurant that serves genuinely kabayan recipes in Bangkok.
Authentic Pinoy dishes in Carenderia Natin
A group of Filipino expats, Herbert Acedo, Netsie Acedo, Mariz Lomotos and Leo Lomotos, has opened a Filipino restaurant that aims to satisfy OFWs in Thailand who crave for the taste of home that only carinderias or eateries can provide.
“We want to give our customers a real “sariling atin” vibe,” says Mariz Lomotos, one of the proprietors of Carinderia Natin. “We want our diners to forget that they aren’t in Thailand for a while and feel that they’re back in the Philippines enjoying their favorite “lutong-bahay,” she added.
Carinderia Natin opened on Sunday, August 1 and is located inside the Sanee Food Market at Phetkasem Road (Opposite Seacon Bangkhae/Prasichareon MRT station), Bangkok.
The ‘pagkaing pinoy’ food stall offers a long list of authentic Filipino food menu – from the hot sour sinigang soup, irresistibly delicious tortang talong to the saucy menudo and crunchy lechon kawali.
Also included in their list are the delightful ‘kakanin’ that reminds us of home – banana cue, bibingka, ginanggang, turon, biko, and others.
